People thrift-shopping are usually looking for an explosive deal, but that became a bit too literal at a Durham, N.C., Habitat for Humanity Restore on Saturday when a volunteer found a live grenade in the drawer of a donated dresser.
The person who discovered it kept a cool head, making sure it was off the premises before taking any other action, the store said on its Facebook page.
“The volunteer who found it very calmly took it outside the building before alerting management, who called law enforcement,” the store wrote, adding that the premises were evacuated and closed for a few hours while police determined that there was no threat. No one was injured, according to WTVD-TV.
“We are very thankful for Durham Police Department’s quick response and for our well-trained staff and volunteers who safely evacuated the building,” the store said, along with a plea for benefactors to avoid inadvertently booby-trapping their offerings. “We are open again to shoppers and donors, but please check your drawers before donating to the ReStores!”
