FIBA Approved flooring coating products provide exemplary approach to prolonging court life

MIES (Switzerland) - Being approved by FIBA's Equipment & Venue Centre for 20 years, Bona's flooring coatings and maintenance products provide exemplary approaches to prolonging court life while meeting the rigorous demands of basketball competitions.

Bona, founded in Sweden in 1919, is a pioneer of the hardwood floor industry, providing products for installing, renovating, maintaining, and restoring basketball courts. Both the FIBA Basketball Women's World Cup 2018 and the FIBA Intercontinental Cup 2023 held in Tenerife, were played on courts that used Bona's approved products.

All FIBA approved products must be tested independently by a FIBA Accredited Test Institute against FIBA Testing Requirements. One such crucial test run by the FIBA Equipment & Venue Centre for flooring coating and maintenance product is slip resistance, which is a measure of the surface’s ability to resist slippage and to provide adequate friction to allow players to make safe changes in direction during the game of basketball. Additionally, specular gloss and wear resistance, measures in assessing basketball court surfaces, are also tested.

"For Bona, FIBA approval serves as a definitive quality endorsement for the Bona System as a premium solution for durable and beautiful sport floors,” said Lars Högwall, Director of Strategic New Business Development at Bona.

"This approval also assures contractors and facilities, providing them with the confidence that the solution provided by Bona is verified by FIBA. As one of the first coating partners for FIBA Equipment & Venue Centre, we have worked together over the years to jointly support the best possible flooring solutions in the industry."

One key aspect of Bona products' nature is the system approach and reuse of materials. While renovating and re-coating a wooden floor has long been an established practice, a reference study from Bona highlighted a 78 percent carbon footprint reduction when re-finishing rather than replacing wood floors. The ability to renovate a resilient flooring surface was not an option until only recently.

With maintenance key to a basketball court's performance and lifespan, Bona introduced an innovative solution in 2018 to renovate resilient floors in an effort to save material from being torn out and likely thrown into landfills. The Bona Resilient System is a process that stands up to what is required to bring worn or damaged sports floors back to life.

"FIBA's Equipment Approval program, in collaboration with top-tier suppliers in the industry, has long been championing high-level basketball performance worldwide through its stringent testing protocols. Additionally, the partnership program also doubled up its efforts in facilitating even closer collaboration between the basketball community and the industry.

"Given the increasing emphasis on sustainability in industry practices, such as extending product life and minimizing waste, we believe this global partnership platform is now more relevant than ever," said Bart Prinssen, FIBA Head of Equipment & Venue Centre.

The FIBA Venue Guide launched in 2023 provides further clarifications and recommendations regarding the design and fit-out of basketball venues. The consideration of maintenance in venue operations is specifically emphasized.
