Fake call centre gang busted, four arrested for duping Chandigarh resident of Rs 1.9L

The Cyber Crime Cell of Chandigarh Police has busted a gang of four persons who were allegedly involved in duping a city resident of Rs 190,762 through a fake call centre. Police have recovered 42 mobile phones and 6 SIM cards from the accused.

The accused have been identified as Shahidul (a resident of Delhi), Gautam Kumar, Bablu Kumar, and Sarvan Kumar, all three residents of Bihar. All the accused are in their early twenties. While Shahidul has done his schooling till Class 8, the other three arrested individuals have completed Class 12.

According to the police, a FIR was registered on the complaint of one Rajbir Singh Rai from Chandigarh, in which he alleged that the accused, posing as employees of a credit card company, duped him of Rs 190,762 from his Indusind Bank’s credit card.

During investigation, the raiding party on the basis of technical support and secret information, conducted a raid in Patna, Bihar, and arrested the accused.

Briefing their modus operandi, the police said that the scammers pretended to be the bank officials and made a call on behalf of a particular bank. First, they took the victim in good faith and then lure them with various kinds of fake schemes on their credit cards.

Festive offer

Fraudsters asked the complainant to download an APK file and fill up the details of the credit card. This method involves injecting malicious apps into mobiles as a result of which users receive files directly in their accounts and applications are downloaded on the device on clicking on the files. The data obtained is automatically sent to the fraudster, who uses it to commit crimes and steal money from bank accounts, police said.
