Jeenbekov thanks EU for support in improving electoral system in Kyrgyzstan

Bishkek, Feb. 19, 2018 / Kabar/. President Sooronbay Jeenbekov received Peter Burian, the European Union Special Representative for Central Asia, who arrived in Kyrgyzstan to exchange views on further cooperation of the European Union with Kyrgyzstan.

Jeenbekov noted the active interaction of Kyrgyzstan with the institutions of the European Union and stressed the importance of accelerating bilateral negotiations on a new Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement between the Kyrgyz Republic and the European Union.

In addition, he expressed gratitude to the European Union for supporting Kyrgyzstan's efforts in improving the electoral system, supporting social programs, including the project to provide clean drinking water to the population in remote regions (Taza Suu).

EU Special Representative Peter Burian stressed that the European Union is a reliable partner of Kyrgyzstan, supports Kyrgyzstan's efforts in strengthening parliamentary democracy, the rule of law and socio-economic development of the country.

Peter Burian said that within the framework of his visit he plans to hold a seminar on the topic "EU-Central Asia relations from the point of view of Kyrgyzstan", where the perspectives of EU activities in Kyrgyzstan and Central Asia in general will be discussed.

"We notice your focus on the issue of regional development and we are impressed by the fact that priorities are clearly defined in this direction," the EU Special Representative Peter Burian said and expressed readiness for cooperation in implementing projects aimed at supporting the regions.

Jeenbekov said that Kyrgyzstan highly appreciates the assistance of partners to develop the regions of the country, create jobs and reduce the flow of migration.

"In working with international donors, we intend to give priority to issues of support for regional development projects, including increasing the capacity to supply Kyrgyzstan's products to the European market, and above all, to provide comprehensive assistance to small and medium-sized businesses. We highly appreciate the preferences granted by the European Union," he said recalling that the Kyrgyz Republic is the only Central Asian country to receive the status of the GSP +.
