KUALA LUMPUR: Police have identified more than 1,000 potential troublemakers who are capable of inciting trouble during the upcoming general election, said Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun.
He said the individuals were identified based on their previous records.
"The potential trouble could be in the form of fake news, rumours of phantom voters and Daesh militant group threats. We do not want to use force or intimidation during the 14th general election (GE14). All will be done in accordance with the law.
"We will take action against those who attempt to disrupt the flow of the coming election," he told a press conference after chairing the meeting for state police chiefs, commissioners and commandants today.
Mohamad Fuzi said more than 100 hotspots during the coming polls have also been identified as GE14 hotspots.
"Police will focus on areas expected to have a stiff contest in GE14 to maintain public order," he stressed.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on Tuesday had said that authorities have identified "some parties" who attempted to create problems.
He instructed police to keep watch on the possible troublemakers and urged everyone to cooperate with the police to make GE14 a safe event.
He said it happened during the last general election when it was falsely alleged that 40,000 Bangladeshi nationals had been brought into the country as phantom voters.
