Courts reject Rosell's latest request for bail

Barcelona Still consider him a flight risk

Spain's national court has denied another request for bail from former Barcelona president Sandro Rosell as they consider him a flight risk.

Rosell faces charges for illegal commissions relating to a deal involving the Brazilian national football team.

The case, known as Operation Rimet, saw prosecutors argue against the request from Rosell and Joan Besoli, who are just two of the six people charged.

Rosell argued that his defence would be difficult if he is jailed until the case is heard on February 25, but the court rejected the claim based upon the fact that he has been in contact with his defence team.

Regarding the flight risk, magistrates decided that it was an elevated risk for Rosell.

"[Rosell is a person in] contact with people and other countries since he has been investigated," the court reiterated.

"The circumstances have only changed in the sense that we now have a date for the hearing on February 25, 2019, which, if anything, elevates the flight risk."

In the case of Besoli, the court also pointed to the possibility that he could claim refuge in his home country of Andorra and refuse to return.
