Seats of Justice: A Look at Washington County

The next stop on the Supreme Court’s tour of county courthouses takes viewers to Marietta in Washington County.

Marietta is a city rich in history and home to many firsts: the first settlement in the Northwest Territory, the first seat of government in this territory, the first Black man to legally vote in Ohio, and more.

The current courthouse, built in 1903, boasts unique architecture -- like the remains of an old jailhouse on the fourth floor – signifying the historical presence this traditional building maintains.

Learn more about Washington County and beyond in the mini-documentary series, “Seats of Justice,” on the Ohio Channel.
